I was talking with a friend last night, and the subject of restoring or repainting old, built models came up. Personally, I don't see the point when most of us have newer or better unbuilt modelers in the stash awaiting our attention. My friend suggested that some guys are reworking their built models because they can't afford new ones.
So that got me wondering if it's possible to find a really good kit for under five dollars. So in that spirit, I'm going to challenge myself tomorrow to look for the best kit I can find in that price range. Assuming there are modelers selling their stashes, it shouldn't be too hard. I'll report back later in the weekend.
I've gone to Mosquito Con a lot in the past and have come away with fantastic deals. Some of the older/cheaper kits can be a bugger to build but I've been fortunate to have some real gems. I almost left with a 1/32 Revell Tornado last time for $15 but decided I didn't have the room. I'm excited for tomorrow, maybe I'll catch you there!
ReplyDeleteI hope you can find a decent kit for under $5.00. I occassionally do a "clensing of the stash monster" and will get a table at a contest every other year or so. My goal...is to not bring those same kits home with me! I know what a kit is "worth" but I just want to sell it to get cash for another kit I'd rather have. It pains me to see guys selling their stash kits with the same prices as a shop or on-line store...what's the point?! It ruins the spirit of the event. You should be able to walk into a show/contest vend area and get deals! If you're wanting to make money go through the hassle of selling on eBay.
ReplyDeleteAs for restoring old kits, I've done it a couple of times with some of my Dad's old models. He had a few Collect Aire aircraft in his built collection that I inherited when he died. These kits are no longer available and expensive to begin with! I'm in the process of "restoring" a Grumman Guardian that he built in his later years...when his skills weren't...let's say, up to par...haaa, he'd laugh at that I'm sure, I hope. Sorry pop!
